Two weeks is not a lot of time — but it is enough. Engineers who prep strategically in 14 days consistently outperform those who study haphazardly for months. The difference is structure. Here's the framework.
Before You Start: Set Your Baseline
On day one, don't start studying. Instead, take a mock behavioral interview and solve one medium LeetCode problem cold. Record the time. This gives you a real baseline so you can measure progress — and tells you where to focus.
Week 1: Behavioral Foundation + Easy Coding
Most candidates under-prepare for behavioral questions because they feel "softer." They're not. Behavioral rounds eliminate strong engineers who can't communicate their experience clearly. Use the first week to build your story bank using the STAR framework:
- Situation: Set the context briefly (1-2 sentences)
- Task: What you specifically were responsible for
- Action: The concrete steps you took (this is the bulk)
- Result: What happened, ideally in numbers
Write out 6-8 STAR stories covering: a conflict, a failure, a time you influenced without authority, a technical challenge, a project you led, and a moment you had to learn quickly. These cover 90% of what you'll be asked.
For coding, solve 2-3 easy problems per day in your target language. Focus on arrays, strings, and hash maps — the most frequently tested patterns.
Week 2: System Design + Medium Coding + Mock Interviews
In the second week, increase coding difficulty to mediums (2 per day) and add one system design concept per day. Cover the core building blocks: load balancers, caches, databases (SQL vs. NoSQL), message queues, and CDNs. For each one, understand: what problem does it solve, what are its trade-offs, and when would you use it?
By day 10, run two full mock interviews — one behavioral, one technical. Record yourself or do them with a friend. Watching yourself answer behavioral questions is uncomfortable and invaluable.
Days 13-14: Consolidation, Not New Material
Do not try to cram new topics in the final two days. Review your weakest areas, re-read your STAR stories out loud, and do one easy warm-up problem the morning of your interview. Sleep matters more than one more LeetCode problem.
